M-STEP Summative Assessment

We are excited to announce that WCA will participate in the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP) for the first time!!! The Spring 2023 M-STEP includes summative assessments designed to measure student performance relative to the Michigan Academic Standards in English language arts (ELA), mathematics, science, and social studies.

Why is WCA participating in M-STEP? We intend to use M-STEP results to give our leadership team a fuller picture of our curriculum, instructional techniques, and resources needed to prepare our Warriors for their future. Additionally, when combined with classroom work, report cards, Star assessments, and other tools, M-STEP results give a more well-rounded picture of how students are doing and how far they have come.

Who will take the M-STEP? Students in grades 3 through 8 will take the M-STEP according to the chart below.

When will the M-STEP take place? WCA will administer the assessment on various days between April 19 and May 7. This will ensure that students have plenty of time to complete the test at a comfortable pace, and account for absences, testing breaks, etc. Students will only take one assessment a day. More specific reminders will be given to each individual grade. *Our final Star test for these grades will be pushed to the end of May.*

Where and how will M-STEP take place? Each student will take the M-STEP in their homeroom classroom with their homeroom teachers. The test will be taken on the computer (just like the Star assessments). Hopefully, this will provide a sense of familiarity and comfort.

How can I help my child prepare? On your child’s testing days, we ask that you help them get a good night’s rest and are on time for breakfast. Academically, they can spend use IXL to help them review practice questions (they will also do this with their teachers).

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Sarah Patterson (Director of Curriculum & Instruction) at sarah.patterson@westsideca.org or 313-202-9735.
